In the movie Youve Got Mail, the sub-plot aside from the love angle
is that the heroine (played by Meg Ryan) was forced out of business
when the big-time bookstore owner (played by Tom Hanks) moved
into town.
Megs character owned a quaint little bookstore which she inherited
from her mother. Although the prices of her books were a little steep,
she makes up for it in service. She packs the books in a specialized
bag, and she knows all of her customers by name.
Toms character, on the other hand, moved into town to build a branch
of a big chain-bookstore which offered discounted prices and a huge
building, as compared to Megs little bookshop on one corner of the
towns streets.
In the end, Meg was forced out of business because her customers
went to Toms monstrous bookshop.
Nowadays, this situation will not hold true anymore.
More and more small organizations are paving the way and giving big
businesses a shot of their own medicine
In the movie, the reason why Meg Ryan was forced out of business is
because she cannot profit anymore. Her prices are steep as compared
to the other big business discounted rates.
Her only edge is that she gives personal service, she knows her
customers by name and she has a very small staff, about 2 or 3
employees.
As a small organization you may turn around and have these qualities
as your edge to compete against the big sharks in business.

Excuses! Excuses! When we fail to do something we are expected to do, we almost always have an excuse for it. However, if we analyze it closely, an excuse is a self-destructive alibi for having failed to do something, especially when it involves attaining a goal. Instead of trying to persevere in finding ways to continue achieving a goal, some of us resort to excuses.
Even a handicap cannot be used as an excuse. Many handicapped but determined people have become achievers and champions. Instead of using a handicap as an excuse, let us turn it into an asset. Let us explore this further.
A handicap need not be a reason for failure. On the contrary, a handicap can be a reason for success. People with a handicap always have an offsetting strength that allows them to overcome problems better than others.
A person with a handicap has one obsession – to lead a normal life. Depending on the handicap, a person would prefer to be as independent as possible. So he struggles and finds ways to overcome his impediment. When he is able to achieve his goal, this raises his self-esteem. In turn, he inspires others.
Everybody has handicaps in varying forms and degree. That is why; it requires effort and determination to overcome them. Handicaps can either be physical, financial, or emotional. And they can either be real or imagined.
Whenever we look at a handicap, we almost always look on the negative side only. Its about time we take a look at the positive side of it. The positive side may be the difficult side, but its the one worth looking into. Its the side that is going to lead us to excel in life.
If you think your handicap is physical, like having a weak body, you can counteract this through proper diet and training exercises. As long as the physical parts of your body are intact and mobile, theres no reason why you cannot make it strong and useful. Why? Even those without a leg (for example) can be made to walk or run normally. With the advancement of science, artificial legs can help a handicap function with great mobility.
It your handicap is financial, then the more reason you have to rise above your present status. And if your financial status limits your educational attainment to improve your life, the school is not the only place to learn. jobs? Is there something special that separates those people from the others?
One reason some people keep their jobs while others around them are being
downsized is their dedication. For some people a job is just a job and those are
usually the first ones to be eliminated when there is the need to cut staff.
Companies have a tendency to keep those employees who are dedicated, loyal and
put forth a little extra effort to get the job done. These are the people are receive
recognition for their efforts and are the first ones to be considered for a promotion.
You must become one of those dedicated people if you want to not only obtain the
perfect job but also keep it throughout a struggling economy.
Although there is never a guarantee you will keep your job, the harder you work
and the more dedicated you are the better the chances are that you will still being
sitting at your desk when others have been terminated. In places where no union
enforces the rules, the newest person is not necessarily the first person to go but

Develop your own standards rather than following what others around you are

There are many such factors that determine if we are on the right seat. Let us examine some of them.
Involvement
How involved we are with what we do? Are we so engrossed with our job, that we have no time to think of anything else? Or we are so less connected with our job that having it or not makes no difference to us? Albert Einstein, the great scientist was so involved with his job of thinking and finding solutions to mysteries of physics and cosmos that he had no time left for anything else. His involvement was total. Do you have such an involvement?
Joy
Do we feel joy in what we do? I have taken this right near the top, because if we are dissatisfied for any reason, we will never get joy. If we get joy then most of things are going in the right direction. So think if you are getting joy in your job?
Respect
If you are working with the right people and doing the right job, you will always get the respect of your colleagues. If the respect is missing, please take that as a red signal telling you that something might be amiss.
Skill
Do you find your skills and aptitude matching the job requirements? You might be made for greater things in life. Please get your skills assessed and find out if you are wasting time with a low skilled job, when you should have been working with something requiring great skills and abilities.
