25 Jan 12 How To Improve Your Job Prospects

When you are employed it is really easy to get complacent about job prospects. You settle into a nice routine, you get used to how things work and the only time you ever seriously think about your career prospects is when you are thinking about applying for a new job. Then suddenly you find out that everyone else has so much better prospects than you do and you are very much at the bottom of the pile. So the time to actually think about improving your job prospects is now!

There are lots of things that you can do to make you stand out from your colleagues and be that little bit more employable. Voluntary work is a great way of picking up new skills, showing that you have a sense of community responsibility and that you are not afraid of hard work.

Studying in your own time can also really improve your career, even if the subject matter isnt wholly relevant (although the more relevant, the better) studying helps sharpen your analytical skills and helps you to become much more confident in general.

New skills can also be something that you can help your CV stand out. These could be organisational skills or learning how to manage, in different settings etc. So being in charge of a group of Scouts or Brownies certainly shows that you can be in charge, lead and (probably) that you have the patience of a saint. So dont discount learning new skills, even if they dont seem to be directly related to your work.

In the workplace, whether you are permanently employed or a temp working for a recruitment agency, make sure that you are flexible about work, as efficient as you can be and that you are always willing to take on new challenges. Adopting a Can Do attitude will also boots your job prospects.

26 Dec 11 How to get Through Your First Week at Work

Anyone starting a new job is really bound to feel a sense of apprehension. Going into the office on your first day, especially if you are in a relatively junior position can seem a daunting experience. After all, you dont even know where the toilets are, or where to make yourself a drink, so the first day and even the first week can seem quite slow and lengthy.

But there are some things that you can do to help yourself and make the settling in process a little bit quicker. Dont be afraid to ask. If you dont know how to do something or where something is, then ask, but try not to ask the same person all the time, or they may grow a little tired of it.

Dont be too forward on your first day. If you come in and try to change things too quickly, people may resent you. So just adapt to how things are done and dont keep telling people how your last employer did things: they probably wont be interested.

It is always important to be friendly but do not attach yourself to a particular individual until you know what is what in the office and understand the dynamics of the workplace. It is really easy to alienate people by inadvertently saying the wrong thing. Remember that these people are colleagues, not necessarily your new best friends.

If you are temping for a recruitment agency, then you probably will get used to settling into new work experiences very quickly, but you should still ensure that you dont rock the boat too much, whether you are temping or there on a permanent basis. Changes in the workplace often need to be handled sensitively and many people may be wary of a new person joining the team, so simply be yourself, but be slightly reserved until you start to understand how things work and what the office is really like. That way, settling in should be no trouble at all and you will soon be a valued member of the workplace.

14 Nov 10 Secretarial Work- How to Choose a Recruitment Agency

If you are a secretary looking to enlist with a recruitment agency then either you go online and pick the first name that appears after your search results come up, or you just walk along the High Street and go into the first agency you see, dont you? Well you could, but really you shouldnt. If you are a secretary then you should perhaps try to find out which agencies pay the best rates, which will allow you the greatest amount of flexibility, which seem quite professional and which seem like they may just be more interested in making some money and arent too bothered about the standard of service.

Sure you can just sign up with the first one, but isnt that selling yourself a bit short? After all, a good agency can help you to secure really interesting work, great rates of pay and some fantastic job opportunities.

You may wish to consider asking an agency about the number of clients they have, how many people they have signed up with them looking for work. How many positions they tend to fill and also you can ask about how long they have been trading, what they can offer you in terms of assistance.

Dont sign up with any agency that doesnt return your phone calls or emails. Although many agencies are online, often they will have premises as well. If you can, then try to take a trip to one of their offices, so that you can assess what the staff are like and if they seem competent and aware of what they are doing. If you are choosing an online agency, then look at their emails and communications. Are they professional, or is the website and their emails littered with spelling mistakes?

A good agency will appear polite, professional and realistically choosing an agency is as much about you interviewing them and deciding if you can work with them, than it is about them choosing you. So dont be afraid to ask lots of questions and to check just how reliable and professional they are, so that when you sign up with them, you really can land that dream job.

16 Oct 10 Retirement A Dirty Word?

The days when men had to retire at 65 and women at 60 are now long gone. Many people now want to continue to work, some because they have to for financial reasons, but others simply enjoy feeling that they are still a useful part of Society. Until recently, there was very much a feeling in the workplace that once you reached 65, you were pretty much past it and really you should go home, look at your retirement clock and go on cruises. My how times have changed!

Now there is an increasing feeling that people have a lot to offer after the age of 60 or 65. After all with age comes experience and that can often be life experience. Many older people are also very patient, so they can be calm in a crisis and not panic when all does not go to plan.

Many people find that they enjoy a second career, very different from their first one. So someone who has been the MD of a company may enjoy working with young people, or gaining skills in IT and then mentoring younger people. Gardening, odd job work, tutoring are all really worthwhile careers that can offer people over the age of 60 a chance to learn new skills and sharpen up their existing skillset.

You will find that if you sign on with a recruitment agency that age doesnt necessarily have to be a barrier, although some jobs cannot be undertaken after the age of 70. But really there are lots of opportunities available, whatever your age.

So retirement should not be viewed as something that is automatic and that you have to do. When and if you retire should be entirely your choice and something that happens when you want it to be. Retirement is therefore not a dirty word, but something that can be done when you choose and you will enjoy it much more, rather than if you are forced to retire.

In this age of technology a CV put together on an old typewriter and sent snail mail is not enough.
A Web CV is simply a copy of your CV produced on a web page that can be accessed via the Internet rather than held on your PC at home. It is an ideal addition to your job hunting toolkit if you intend to spend any time away from your PC.

Imagine being away for the weekend, whether on a wild trip to Amsterdam or a cosy hotel in Paris. You pop into an Internet caf to find the nearest Italian restaurant and browse the web to use up the rest of your pre-paid time. You come across the perfect job! With a Web CV you can send an email with your CV Web address and password to the employer or recruitment agency and they can view your CV immediately. Indeed, whether you are moving house, taking a gap year abroad or travelling extensively in your current job you can give employers and agencies instant access to your CV and you can apply for any vacancy at any time.

With a CV Web page you can ring employers or agencies about a job advertised in the local paper and instead of just sending your CV by post a few days later, why not give them your web address and password over the phone? They can look at your CV while you are still talking. You will be remembered for being innovative, professional and efficient.

Even if you apply for a vacancy via email you can include a link to your CV Web Page or add it to your covering letter. Employers in every line of business use computer technology to a small or larger degree. A Web CV will show employers and recruiters that you are aware of and embracing the latest technology.

Add a Web CV to your toolkit today and get ahead of the rest.

29 Jun 09 Recruiter split – Share income or split relationships?

A particularly unique job order needed some tweaking. Couple of us recruiters and our good client met over coffee. We could not help over hear the next table – also recruiters (is this cafe a recruiter hang out or what?) were on to their banter. Their conversation was getting hotter than the brew. Long story short: Your job order, my resume, how do we split the income.

Our client asked, does that happen all the time. We volunteered a guess, on the negative. Heading back, we googled out recruiter splits and you would be surprised to a lot of dirty linen in public (IPs – so to say).

Green opportunities beckon – you have the job order, I have my resume archives gathering dust. We jump in, all in good will. When there is income to share, goodwill is under stress and, relationships split. Whats a good method:

1. The side that brings the opportunity takes the larger share (The risk is taken by this recruiter in dealing the business)
2. The person sending resumes is usually pulling out of the archives – not that there were hot hot resumes
3. If there are niche skills, or the recruiter is going out of the way to source resumes – discuss costs then and there
4. Basically agree on the split before sharing the resume
